General dentist workforce grows 10% since 2019

The number of general dentists in the U.S. increased from 110,730 in 2019 to 121,640 in 2023, an increase of 9.8%.

California was home to the largest number  of general dentists out of any state during that time frame, with 18,820 in 2023, according to data from the Labor of Bureau Statistics. 

In April 2024, the agency updated the employment figures for 2023. 

Here is the number of general dentists in the U.S. from 2019 to 2023, along with the state with the most dentists and highest concentration of dentists each year:

2019

Total U.S. employment: 110,730

State with the most dentists: California, 16,220

State with the highest employment of dentists per thousand jobs: Vermont, 1.17

2020

Total U.S. employment: 95,920

State with the most dentists: California, 12,040

State with the highest employment of dentists per thousand jobs: Wyoming, 1.16

2021

Total U.S. employment: 108,680

State with the most dentists: California, 14,770

State with the highest employment of dentists per thousand jobs: Virginia, 1.3

2022

Total U.S. employment: 120,740

State with the most dentists: California, 18,240

State with the highest employment of dentists per thousand jobs: Virginia, 1.34

2023

Total U.S. employment: 121,640

State with the most dentists: California, 18,820

State with the highest employment of dentists per thousand jobs: Hawaii, 1.2
