UB dental school developing VR goggles for dental implant procedures

Two faculty members at the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine have received seed grants to develop new uses for dental AI.

Ahmet Orgev, DDS, clinical associate professor of restorative dentistry, is developing virtual reality goggles to better plan for dental implant and dental prosthetic procedures as well as improve patient communication, according to a March 7 news release from the university.

The goggles would create streamlined planning and placement of dental implants, reducing human error. Patients would also be able to virtually see the results of a dental implant before the procedure, increasing case acceptance.

Adaias Matos, DDS, PhD, clinical assistant professor of restorative dentistry, is implementing ways to use AI in the classroom to provide dental students with individualized assessments, especially for courses with large class sizes.

Both Dr. Orgev and Dr. Matos were awarded $5,000 grants from Academic Affairs through the Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching Transformation, the release said.
