Dentists in Michigan are concerned for patients who are currently receiving clear aligner treatment from SmileDirectClub after the teledentistry company shut down, ABC affiliate wzzm13.com reported Dec. 11.
SmileDirectClub announced Dec. 8 it would be shutting down its global operations immediately after efforts to recapitalize the business failed. The company said it is unable to provide support to its existing customers but that more information about refunds would become available once next steps are determined. Patients under the company's SmilePay Plan are still expected to continue their monthly payments until payment for their clear aligners has been made in full, according to an FAQ page.
Jared Van Ittersum, DDS, told the news station that there is not a lot of direction for patients, while Elias Achey, DMD, compared the situation to patient abandonment.
SmileDirectClub did not respond to the news station's request for more information.
The Michigan Dental Association also told the news station that it was concerned for patients' well-being and advised SmileDirectClub patients to consult with a dentist for further treatment options.
Dr. Van Ittersum and Dr. Achey said the decision to continue treatment could be on a case-by-case basis because of pre-care standards followed by dental professionals. Some patients may have to restart treatment.
