How DSOs can recruit the best staff in a seller's market

There are a few key attributes DSOs should look for when recruiting staff, according to one exec.

Barry Lyon, DDS, a chief dental officer for the division of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry for Dental Care Alliance, recently spoke with Becker's about what makes a good candidate for a DSO employee.

Question: What should DSOs look for in an employee?

Dr. Barry Lyon: Hiring dentists can be a lot like fishing: cast your hook, hope for the big one and toss back the ones that do not measure up. If the fisherman is hungry, there are very few catches that are thrown back. If the fisherman is not hungry, he can be selective and keep the ones most likely to feed his family. Today, most DSOs are like the hungry fisherman and frequently find themselves hiring out of need instead of want.

Today, DSOs find the recruiting and hiring markets to be very competitive. According to Consani Associates, there are approximately 300 DSOs and all are vying for the best dentists. It has become a "sellers" market with candidates holding out for the best opportunities.  

What makes the best candidate for your DSO? Obviously, experience is desired whenever possible, but there are other criteria that create the best provider with whom to invest your resources. Personality, professionalism, a desire to continue learning, the ability to work within the office ecosystem and strong communication skills are all important. Combining the right office culture with a well-rounded candidate will more often than not result in a successful recruitment and retention.
